When it comes to quitting smoking everyone is more than happy to give you a quit smoking advice. Some will talk from experience and others who never smoked still know someone who stopped smoking, and are more than happy to tell you about their success at giving cigarettes the flick. So what is the solution?
As you know there are plenty of products on the market that are designed to help you quit smoking from nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches or gum ,natural products such as herbs to stop smoking ,educational books ,acupuncture and even hypnosis to stop smoking.
All these methods have their rightful place and helped a lot of people and that’s why they are still on the market .The problem that a lot of smokers face is using these product as a quick fix neglecting probably the most important issue of dealing and understanding their addiction.
Before you start using all, or any of the products that are meant to help you quit you need to understand and accept that this is an addiction .Once you accept that it is a problem/addiction then you can take actions to stop smoking. Mental attitude is the most important asset you are going to have while trying to quit.
Ask yourself why am I still smoking ?if you answered I still enjoy it and I can quit any time I like then you are probably not ready to give up, you are still in denial stage and these treatments will probably not work.
If on the other hand you answered, I don’t know or I’m addicted but I want to quit you have a much better chance. Some ex smokers are the worse when it comes to dealing with other smokers and that’s because they know how hard it was to give up.
Physically you will suffer withdrawal symptoms that will drive you up the wall, you will be on edge for a while and the people you love are most likely to suffer from your emotional outbursts. But they will be supportive of you because they know how important it is for you to quit.
Mentally the battle will be tough and you got to be prepared for the fact that you are going to have strong craving for a cigarette and these will come and go without warning keep yourself active/occupied to reduce the tension and need for a smoke. The first few days are going to be the hardest so avoid alcohol and coffee, these thing trigger pleasurable emotion related to smoking and you could soon find yourself lighting up another cigarette.
While going cold turkey is probable the best option to clear your body form all the toxins associated with smoking, it is also the hardest thing to do and the use of quit smoking products could help to take the edge of the cravings. The great thing about quitting is that you can notice and feel a change within few days which then gives another boost to really kick the habit. Some things to keep in mind: after a few weeks you feel so good you might think that you got it beat and you can have a cigarette occasionally but in reality it’s just the addiction getting another chance at pulling you back .these craving will happen a few times through the first year and then taper off as the years goes by.
